SPIC MACAY

SPICMACAY’s intention is to enrich the quality of formal education by increasing awareness about different aspects of Indian heritage and inspiring the young mind to imbibe the values embedded in it. It seeks to inspire youth through experiencing the mysticism embodied in the rich and heterogeneous cultural tapestry of Indian and World Heritage, with a hope that the beauty, grace, values, and wisdom embodied in these arts will influence their way of life and thinking and inspire one to become a better human being. For this, the most accomplished artistes of the country render programs of Indian classical music and dance, folk, poetry, theatre, traditional paintings, crafts & yoga primarily in schools and colleges. In 2011, SPIC MACAY was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana award in recognition of its contribution to youth development. Every year, we arrange more than 5000 programs in more than 1500 institutions, across almost 1000 cities, touching over 3 million students. All these programs are organized by thousands of volunteers – largely students, teachers, housewives, retired people, professionals, young and old. SPIC MACAY celebrates Nishkaam Seva - the spirit of volunteerism – of giving selflessly without expectation, a value that is intrinsic to our culture and important to nurture in today's world.

OUR FOUNDER

Dr Kiran Seth (born 1949) is an Indian academician, ex-Professor and ex-Professor Emeritus in the department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi since 1976, and is most known as the founder of SPIC MACAY (1977), a non-profit organization which promotes Indian classical music, Indian classical dance, and other aspects of Indian culture, amongst youth the world over, through its 500+ chapters. Dr Kiran Seth was bom on 27th April 1949. Dr Kiran Seth's father (Late) Sh. Bhojraj Seth, was a mathematician and one of the first professors at the IIT Kharagpur, established in 1951, while his mother (Late) Smt. Bhagawathi Seth was a housewife. Dr Kiran Seth secured AIR (All India Rank) 28 in the prestigious Joint Entrance Examination. Dr Kiran Seth was one of the toppers of Mechanical Engineering (B.Tech) from IIT Kharagpur in the year 1970, after which he did his Masters and Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York.

FOUNDER'S CAREER

He started his career working as a Member of the Technical Staff (MTS) at Bell Laboratories, New Jersey in 1974, a job he gave up to return to India in 1976 to teach and do research work at IIT Delhi, where he has been working ever since. It was at IIT Delhi that he founded SPIC MACAY in 1977. He has been a member of several committees and boards, including. Central Advisory Board of Education, General Council of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Executive Board of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, and Advisory Board (Education) of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. He was the Vice Chairman of the General Council of the Film & Television Institute of India (FTI), Pune and also the Member of the Central Advisory Committee (CAC) of National Cadet Corps (NCC). Dr Kiran Seth Seth is credited with setting up the Society for the Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPIC MACAY) in 1977, a society that has done phenomenal amount of work in the area of promoting indian heritage amongst school and colleges in India and in different parts of the world.

FORMATION OF SPICMACY

SPIC MACAY is the biggest, non profit, voluntary, cultural, youth movement in independent India. Its contribution to spreading Indian Culture is unparalleled. Generations of Indians are today aware of different aspects of Indian Heritage and appreciate it, thanks to the efforts of the movement. Today the movement conducts thousands of concerts, lecture demonstrations, workshop demonstrations, talks, yoga, workshops, cinema classics, theater shows and craft workshops all over in schools and colleges so that the young person is inspired and awakened.

Artists

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life... artistes at SPIC MACAY take the Herculean challenge of washing away from our oblivious souls the dust of everyday life, linking our exquisite culture with the youth of our nation, elevating them to a level of serenity and glory, thus forming 'THE EYE' of SPIC MACAY. In absence of their undying support, SPIC MACAY wouldn't have survived a single day. Our movement has been lucky enough to get never ending support of our eminent artists, the Masters, who are sustaining Indian Classical Music, Culture, Heritage as the foundation on which the entire country's 5000 years old Heritage is surviving.

Institutions

What SPIC MACAY is made of, is, individual institutions coming together and materializing its efforts to reach out to the youth. Institutions are the torch bearers and play the role of inculcating the essence of our core Indian values in the psyche of each and every individual. Starting it's journey with the support of only IIT Delhi, now SPIC MACAY has partnered with thousands of Govt. schools, Rural schools, Private and International schools, Degree Colleges, Medical Colleges, Technical Colleges, Universities, Management Institutes, Research Institutes... thus reaching the youths of all backgrounds. With it's vision of reaching all children, SPIC MACAY is now collaborating with groups of institutions like Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas to name a few and thus been able to reach to the children of all sections of society. SPIC MACAY is also connecting with different Govt. Schools in the rural areas of all districts of those states and forging towards its vision with even more zeal and enthusiasm.

Volunteers

Research has shown that people who volunteer often live longer! We at SPIC MACAY follow this motto of life and eventually make our "long" lives worthy of living. The volunteers at SPIC MACAY are self driven individuals who want to give back to the society in terms of the vast heritage we have in store. The volunteers here come with a cultural bend of mind and try and reveal the treasures of Indian culture and heritage to the youth. In the process, the volunteers themselves go through a paradigm shift and gradually become a refined individual. From coordinating the events, coordinating the artists, managing the Programme venue and Stage, to managing the shoe rack; volunteers are the driving force, the skeleton, and the life of SPIC MACAY. These Volunteers are the one who have brought SPIC MACAY to where it is today which is being recognized and appreciated by Govt., Educationist, Corporate, Artists and the Youth of the Country.

Supporters

Supporters are the backbone of SPIC MACAY, without whom, the colossal task SPIC MACAY is endeavoring to achieve will not be possible. Supporters form an integral part of the SPIC MACAY family and it is because of them that SPIC MACAY has been able to move out of the peripheral limitations of the geographical boundaries and has been able to enlighten the world with the richness of the Indian Culture. Being a Voluntary Movement for a noble cause, all of SPIC MACAY's Sponsors and Supporters end up becoming a Volunteer and contribute with large heart towards the cause. They no more remain an outsider or 'Supporter', they soon become the integral part of SPIC MACAY Family and go an extra mile to ensure SPIC MACAY is able to live up to it's promises to the Youth of this country. They are one of the strongest pillars of SPIC MACAY on which the entire movement is standing and growing in leaps and bounds with every passing day.
